DDoS means Distributed Denial of Service. That means that the targeted victim will received two much data for it to handle, and from many different sources. From the network viewpoint, a good example is a huge number of source IP addresses making connections to the same target IP at the same time. The victim may not be able to handle all that, and will refuse to serve legitimate clients.
